We fell in love with cycling the Mediterranean coast during several extended visits throughout the past years. Using it as our base, we savored the not-so-long loop rides, perfectly pitched climbs, jaw-dropping views and obligatory lunch stops in hillside hamlets. Days off the bike were equally as complete with sunrise runs on the Promenade, soaking our legs in the Mediterranean, cruising the local farmer’s market or relaxing with our noses in a book.
The Rides. Our itinerary for this sojourn includes some of our favorite rides in the region. You’ll find plenty of local cyclists and good cafes in these hills and a correspondingly low volume of vehicle traffic. The rides are designed for endurance and building a strong climbing foundation but no one day is a sufferfest. Nothing is obligatory, particularly if you want to take the day off or spend an afternoon exploring Nice’s lively centreville. There are also at least a dozen other circuits we can propose including mostly flat riding along the coast.
Your Accommodations. Another gem we discovered on our last visit to this region is the small auberge located in the pretty village of St. Jeannet. With panoramic views over the Mediterranean, our Auberge des Baous offers the best in authentic French homestay – fine wine, delicious cuisine, panoramic views and a non-touristic French hill town. Free wi-fi available.
