Overview
This itinerary starts from Pisa, the city of the Leaning Tower, and winding through the Pisan countryside, stops at many little known, but very historically and culturally fascinating villages. The tour continues on the Sienese hinterland through southern Tuscany, enjoying the “fairy-tale” atmosphere and the colors of the hills (without forgetting the good wine). The tour heads for many ancient Etruscan villages, always far-away from the tourist tracks, and the 6th day we will arrive in the Vatican city, Rome!
This tour is available also as a self-guided tour.
Itinerary
Day 1 – Welcome to Pisa!
Bonjourno! You will meet your guide at the Pisa airport (or train station) for the short transfer to your hotel. After fitting everyone for their bikes and taking a short spin, you will have the opportunity to visit the seaside town of Pisa, its historical city centre and the Piazza dei Miracoli (the Fields of Miracles) with the Leaning Tower.
Day 2 – Pisa-Volterra (60km).
We start out our ride through Pisa; continue through some beautiful villages, like Lari with the castle, full of history and tradition. Cycling on minor and mostly flat roads through the valley of Era to end up in Volterra, the capital of Alabaster; situated on a hill (530m high), offers us a beautiful view over the surrounding areas.
Day 3 – Volterra – Bagni San Filippo (69 km).
Today we immerse ourselves in a fairy-tale landscape, trough the colours and the perfumes of the Senesi hills. Past Casale, we make our way towards Sovicille and before reaching it we make a detour to the little village of Stigliano. We arrive at Bagni San Filippo in the afternoon, and we can discover the unbelievable properties of its thermal water, which spurts out free from the white rocks.
Day 4 – Bagni San Filippo-Orvieto (73km).
Leaving Bagni, we start our riding through a little known part of Tuscany, among beautiful medieval villages, stunning inhabited lands and the wonderful woods at the slope on Mount Amiata. The last part of our day, bordering Umbria region, leads us to Orvieto, an awesome sight from your saddle situated high on tuff rocks and completely walled.
Day 5 – Orvieto – Ronciglione (62km).
Today we ride between Umbria and Latium. Riding in the unusual landscape of the Calanchi Valley we reach Civita Di Bagnoregio, known as the “diving town” because of the continuous erosion which, over the years, has reduced the town centre in size. We reach Viterbo with its Papal Palace and impressive urban setting, fully maintaining its medieval appearance. Leaving from Viterbo we ride the perimeter of Vico Lake to the small rural town of Ronciglione and our agriturismo for the night.
Day 6 – Ronciglione- Roma (57km+ van).
From Ronciglione we ride to Sutri, a historical town which is famous for its well preserved Roman amphitheatre. We reach Bracciano Lake, where the route continues alongside the lake, visiting the medieval Odescalchi castle. We continue with full immersion in nature and landscape, up to reach the sea of Tirreno. At the village of Palidoro we leave the bikes and take the van (30 minutes) to our hotel located in the city center of Rome!
Day 7 – Homeward Bound.
After breakfast, it will be time to say goodbye. That’s the end of our short but adventure tour, discovering Tuscany and the borderlands between the Romans and the Etruscans. We recommend you stay an extra day in Rome for sightseeing the many city wonders.
