Born in Italy, Gran Fondos are timed and usually very challenging cycling events on scenic and challenging courses. In Italy alone, there are over 1,000 Gran Fondo’s annually, with the most ‘famous’ being the Gran Fondo Felice Giomondi and the Nove Colli (which attracts over 10,000 participants) from around Europe.

The Gran Fondo craze recently crept into France and America, with the first debut of a Gran Fondo in the USA premiering in San Diego, California in 2009.

While distances of Gran Fondos may vary, there are a few things most Gran Fondos share: a scenic course over hilly terrain, thousands of cycling fanatics, big cycling personalities, media and a whole lot of Italian flair.
